The World Wide Web (WWW or Web) was invented by British computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 while working at CERN, the European physics research center in Switzerland. Berners-Lee's goal was to create a system that would allow physicists to share and collaborate on research papers and other documents.

The first website was launched on August 6, 1991, and it was hosted on a NeXT computer at CERN. This website contained information about the World Wide Web project and how to use hypertext, a key concept in the Web, to navigate between pages.

Over the next few years, the Web grew rapidly as more and more websites were created. In 1993, the first popular graphical Web browser, Mosaic, was released, making it easier for people to browse and access information on the Web.

In 1994, the first online transaction took place, with a purchase of a music CD by a customer in Philadelphia. This marked the beginning of e-commerce, which has since grown to become a multi-trillion dollar industry.

Throughout the 1990s, the Web continued to evolve with the introduction of new technologies, such as JavaScript, which allowed for interactive and dynamic web pages. The first search engine, Yahoo!, was launched in 1994, followed by Google in 1998, revolutionizing the way people find information on the Web.

Today, the Web has become an integral part of modern life, with billions of people accessing it every day for everything from entertainment to education to commerce. The Web continues to evolve with new technologies and innovations, such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, promising to transform the way we interact with and use the Internet.
